Legends Of The Fall

During the week I spent with the animals at J's, a stifling summer gave way to a blustery autumn with weather that could turn on a sixpence. The dogs need several good runs in the fields each day, and we experienced almost every type of weather, often on the same walk. Moments of pale sunshine would be replaced by sudden, driving rain that sent me running for cover. The dogs just carried on regardless.

Just made it to this little copse of trees in time

And the sun is out again

We call this ‘The Witch’s Tree’. A witch lives in the hollowed-out centre*

This is probably the highest point nearby that you can get a decent view of Midhurst. In the bottom left you can see what’s left of Cowdray House, devastated by a fire in 1793. That range of hills in the background is the South Downs.
